This bowl was made at a time when my wood supply was limited and had not developed sources of wood. I used many of the left over wood pieces from my Dulcimer making days. I took the various layers of wood and glued them together and then turned. About 6″ tall by 3.5″ wide.
There is an exotic wood importer in town and I would purchase the end cuts off of massive Mahogany timbers used as Ceiling Beams in such places as churches. This plate is about 11 inches wide and resides in Chattanooga at Allison’s parent’s home.
Another Peach bowl from the neighbors yard. What I liked about this bowl was it showed all the layers of wood from the Bark to the Cambria to the heart wood. Maybe 5″ wide by 3″ tall. Turned on the Shopsmith.
Another bowl from the Maple tree taken out of my back yard. About 11 inches wide by 10 deep
This was from a Maple tree I had taken down in y own yard. The tree became mostly fire wood until I began to turn about a year later. The bowl has a natural bark edge and is about 10 inches wide by 7 inches tall. This bowl now resides in Fresno, CA as it was a Christmas gift to my Mom.
My neighor down the street had to remove from the back yard what was left of an old peachtree. I took a 5 ft section of trunk home and got 4 small bowls with the rest jut being rot. This bowl shows allot of cambria (inner bark) which is white as well as the edge is the bark of the tree. I would assume this was my first reverse turned bowl meaning the top of the bowl was towards the outside of the tree rather than towards the middle. About 8 inches high by 4 wide.
This was a very early piece and my first “lidded box”.
If anything I would name this beginners luck. Sometimes things just go right, even if you hve no clue what you are doing. About 5 inches wide by 3 inches tall.

I have found the Tree of Knowledge, and in all places – Broxton, GA.
You will find it at the S.W. corner of Old Fitzgerald Rd. and Alabama St.
Given how old the tree is and the hand crafted benches all around it, I figured this was a spiritual place. A place where important men have gathered over time and pondered life’s questions.
I ask the Tree of Knowledge a couple of questions, however, It gave no answer….Given it was a holiday, I assumed it must not have been working today.
The next time I pass by I will surely stop and try again!
As I was turning this bowl I stopped to check on my progress in the turning and became evident that the bark enclusions had become a Crane flying over a Quarter Moon. A couple from Chicago purchased this while visiting the Dunwoody Farmers Market
