  • The Key is to Keep Z with Me

This turning contains just a bit of Zulu in the center hollow. The wood is Ebony, Paduck and Black Palm. Shake it close to your ear and you can hear her run by.

I made one for the Wood Guy’s Wife too.

  • Bowl #390 Maple

Some days efforts truly stand out from the crowd.

Molly, I hope this bowl gives you many years of Joy, Happy Birthday!

  • Bowl #389 Maple

This maple bowl is referred to as “Angle Wings” Bowl around the house. Also the rim was a simple, smooth, multi bevelled thing.

  • Bowl #388 Spalted Dogwood

Recently, I was able to appreciate my auto mechanic. Instead of writing him a check, he gave me a dogwood he pulled out of his back yard. Literally, pulled out, he’s a car guy, co’mon!

Queen of All Dogs – Wise Beyond Her Ears

    1995 -2010

    Where do you start…..

A journey of 15 years that spanned the USA coast to coast.

My Buddy, My protector, My shadow. We had each others back for a long time.

Some guy in L.A. saved her from the pound the day she was to be euthenized. Turned out this guy had a house to rent and I was helping an old freind find a place as he was moving from Miami. The guy couldn’t keep her and I had to go out of town. I told him if he found a good home for her that would be great but if not I would be back in a week.

He kept her for me and I gave him a bottle of wine in exhange.

She was a mess, trusted no one and threw up all over the passenger seat within three blocks from my house. And so began the journey.

I couldn’t get close to her for about a week unless I slithered on my belly up to her. Over time I figured that it was a man who beat her with his hand. She must have had a horrible first 8 months as she didn’t even understand how to play with toys. In the end her big enjoyment was interacting with me and later Allison. It took a long time to trust her around other people but eventually she came to learn that most people are good and only a few are bad.

When I got her papers I learned that her name was Stacy. I won’t go into why but, lets just say that name had to change and do so quickly. Zulu is part Dobi and Shepard. She is all black and even has black spots on her tongue. I did not figure this this combo untill after 9/11 when they showed some fireman’s dog and how the station would look after the dog since his owner was one of the fallen brave that day.

Anyway, since she was all black and needed a strong and powerful name to live up to, and the fact I love African history, I gave her the name Zulu. What more powerful a name than Zulu, the greatest warrior tribe ever!

Though always a lady she did the name proud in so many ways.

  • Bowl 386 Walnut

With this bowl I carried the top edge upwards. In the process I exposed allot of the pith. This can be dangerous as the pith has a tendency to split if not controlled while drying. Again with a very natural oil finish.

  • Bowl 385 Walnut

This bowl is almost perfectly shaped for a salad bowl. I also have begun to like this edge where the inside rolls out to meet the outside at a defined point. Again there is a knot/hole on the side. I also used a different finish with this as well as 383A, 384A and 385 where it is just a natural oil finish.

  • Bowl 384A Walnut

Another Walnut bowl but this time with the new edge I have been working with. Also in the forefront you can see where a limb came out of this trunk.

I truely hope that Tom and Mary find this bowl a wonderful keepsake of their celebration!

    Thanks N. Cuz

  • Bowl 383A Post Oak

The Log that this bowl came from was cut back in early 2008 (see bowl 142).

It is now spalted and has a different characture than the bowls turned green. It almost smelled as bad, but not quiet. Its a big heafty bowl that looks like it has been around the kitchen for a long time.

  • Bowl 124 Cypress

This bowl is Cypress from Florida that a friend gave me. I turned it vertical, which was easier as it is a softer wood. I finished the inside very smooth and glossy, however I left the exterior a bit less finished and used a satin varnish. The contrast worked nicely.
